How do I clean olive oil on my rug?

I dropped a bottle of olive oil on the floor and on my rug. I have placed newspapers on the rug and under it to try to clean up some of the nearly full bottle of oil. It of course is not working. I am not sure what chemicals would be safe to use.

Have you tried sprinkling baking soda liberally on the oil to soak it up? Leave it overnight and that vac the area.

Hi! I can imagine how frustrated you are right now. Get some kitty litter and let it set at least 15 minutes (I might wait longer). It should soak up quite a bit of it. If you don't have kitty litter, how about oatmeal, or corn starch or baking soda? You may need to try this more than once, since it was so much oil. Additionally, you'll want to scoop it up, with a spatula onto a dust pan. Dawn dish detergent should clean up oily residue once you've soaked it up, It also will clean the dust pan and spatula, since they will be coated. Watch you don't track it into other parts of the house! Good luck, hope this helps!

  • Baking soda, kitty litter will soak it up. What type of floor under the rug?

Need to put plastic/garbage bag under rug to keep oil from flooring ASAP. By rug do you mean an actual rug or carpet?? You can you put rug in wash machine? take it to laundromat ;use cold water, delicate and the largest machine they have. dry on lowest heat it's going to take awhile take a good book. If it's carpet rent a carpet cleaner.
