How do I remodel a showcase?

My father in law left us this antique showcase with all his collection inside and we don't want to disturb it but there's more to his collection that isnt in the self that I would like to store away from the kids. Would it be possible to cut into the wooden bottom and make storage? It sounds hollow and there is no way to access down there currently. It just seems like wasted space. does anyone have any experience with these? I dont want to just cut it open without knowing what's inside.

loosen the wood on the back of it and peek inside to see what's in there.

If you can't loosen the wood on the back you could cut a hole in the back to investigate the inside. It could always be covered with a racing card or picture. You might even be able to use the wood from the front as a backing.

Yup pop the back off. Most likely hollow. Cut that front off make it 2 doors. You can still buy that rope work. Make it 2 panels. You got this.Dont over think it.They used lots of glue then too.

    Good luck.

I would consider making a new box with a plexiglass front and trim it out with that wood rope trim so the box would look like it belongs. Put the backing on with a hinge so you can access it and put it on the top of the cabinet. It would be easier I think than pulling apart the other one.

Lots of old pieces like this, actually are not one continuous piece. You might see if the glass showcase just lifts off the base. I have one, longer than yours, and I can dismantle the whole thing into several pieces if I need to move it.
