Cleaning a shower floor

Celeste S
by Celeste S
My shower has one of those white bumpy fiberglass floors. For the life of me I can't get it clean. The previous owners must have given up getting it clean cause it was pretty bad. I got 80% of the grime off but the last 20% is hanging on. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Celeste

What have you been using? Have you tried Barkeeper's Friend and a scrubby pad (not the technical name, but you probably know what I mean)? I haven't found much that combo won't clean.
  • Good luck with that. You can try to plug the drain and pour bleach on it and let it sit for a while. This may help bring back some of the white for you. What happens with the older shower bases is that they scratch over time leaving micro marks that keep the stains intact. Once the gel coating wears down there is really little you can do other then to refinish the base.

I recently tried a cleanser called Mean Green tub & tile cleaner, it's at the dollar stores. It was amazing. Give it a try if you can find it in your area.

I gave up. I got a new shower. Good luck.
  • Norma, what you did is not uncommon. We have been asked on several occasions to clean a old plastic type shower pan and our reply was always the same. Remove it or waste your money on us cleaning it. And even if we could get it clean, it will just become more dirty due to the scratches that were done when we cleaned last time.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am going to replace it. I didn't realize there was a coating on it that could get scratched. In the mean time I will try the Barkeeper's Friend and the Mean Green.

the reason they get so dingy looking is that too much abrasive scrubbing opens up the pores and then they suck the dirt right in. have one now and hubby that grew up on cleanser. i tried telling him and he's single handedly ruined ours. its a sad thing. :-)

My husband took our doors to the yard and pressure-washed them. I wouldn't recommend this, but I've given up on them myself. They are the originals from 1979 and have seen better days. They need to be retired.

I just cleaned an old shower stall with BarKeepers Soft Cleaning scrub and a kitchen sponge, worked wonders! And then I rinse with PineSol Blue for a refreshing scent. (I also use Barkeepers on my glass top stove to remove spills....again....works wonders.)

I had a coffeemaker sitting on my laminate counter and I moved it and found that it had been leaking for quite some time. There was a lot of hard brown rust on the laminate. I tried Comet, didn't work, tried Tilex and a few other things, none of them worked. The Barkeepers' Friend took it right off.
