Hi Marie, Get a paint roller with a heavy nap and roll your paint on. It will cover the speckled ceiling very well. You may need to do two coats of paint. Let dry welll in between coats.
I have a very old house and have speckled ceilings as well. You basically have two choices, you'll have to purchase a large nap roller to get in all of the nooks and crannies, or prep the entire house and use a spray gun. I chose the later and am glad I did. It was a lot of prep but in the end my arms and back thanked me.
Be sure your first coat is a primer.
Use a spray gun! You can rent them from most hardware stores that sell paint.
