How do you cover up large live oak tree roots?
The tree is huge 34 years old, I want some grass in my backyard but the tree roots are running everywhere. Do I just bring in top soil and cover them up then add sod?
This depends on your locality as well as the type of trees. General practice is to trim during dormant time for the tree. That helps slow down the bleeding of sap and bugs getting into it. Note that if it is a flowering tree you should check with on the internet for the best time to trim as some set their buds right after flowering and some only on new growth and so on. Each type of tree is different so you will need to check that. As for what to trim: dead or damaged branches, branches that are crossed over another and rubbing. Low hanging branches that get in the way when mowing, ones that look to close to another and will cause growth issues as they get bigger. Again this is something you can find on the internet when you look up your type of tree and area.
I have a japanese oak and an evergreen tree as well. Each tree is different :)

After they've lost their leaves. Do not cut so much there's not enough left to feed the roots. Also, be sure to spray the cuts with a good sealer to keep it from rottung, getting infected or becoming a varmint home.
