use chalk paint to color. No sanding needed only a good clean with baking soda and vinagre

What are you trying to do? Is the finish coating coming off of them? Or are they stained? Are you trying to change their color?

I’m used to seeing bamboo furniture that has been clear coated and the clear coat is peeling, and I will go with that answer:

Sand off the clear coat with >200 grit.

Wipe off the dust with a damp cotton rag and check the surface in bright light.

Sand some more with clean paper, then wipe off with denatured alcohol.

Repair any damage now. If you have a scratch or dent, I would touch it up with artists felt tip markers, to match.

Check the bottoms of the seat pans too.

Since clear spray enamel is hard to get a non-run finish, then I would re-coat them with an oil based low VOC polyurethane.

Two light coats with a fine brush and lint free cotton rags for the drips. Keep a eye on the legs & backs for the drips. Let dry 24 hours between coats.

      Thanks.

I’d still sand them, and the TSP solution will be a great clean up.

Spray paints require both serious ventilation and a light hand.

That same light hand doesn’t get the “flash” without sagging for 90% of the people.

Thus I don’t recommend spray paint.

Clean with a liquid called tsp usually on the bottom shelf of the detergent aisle. Dry, then paint with poly. Rustoleum 2X is super and one can should do four chairs. Why not post your project on a Hometalk? Can’t wait to see what you do, Sandi.
