Easy Wreath Storage Ideas

If you love to make wreaths for your home and want to keep them in good repair, the best storage is to hang them up. My practice in the past was to put a clothes hanger through the wreath loop and put a small plastic garbage bag over it; picture like clothes home from the cleaners. I make a small slit with the top of the hanger and just slide it down. You could use garment bags if you get clothes from the cleaners too. I kept them in our spare room closet. However with our disabled son coming to live with us that closet had to be cleared out. I love to keep some wreaths for re-use and also sell some in summer yard sales. This is the idea my husband and I found worked for us to store them in our shed.

First we noticed a box that came from an online purchase was an extra sturdy box. It was about 30 inches long and wide and tall. We have some 36 inch dowel rods on hand from other projects but they are not too thick, so we put three rods together for strength.

I used several wire garbage/bread ties to make a stronger dowel to support the weight of the wreaths. The box came with openings for handles which were reinforced which was perfect for our need.

A plain wreath went in the bottom and the hangers for the wreaths could also go under everything, but I hanged them on the open box handles.

Put one end of the dowel through the open handle on the box and slide the wreaths onto the dowel rods on the other end by their loops. If the wire wreath had no loop, I used the top wire. I found if I put the heaviest wreaths on the ends close to the wall, the rods did not bend at all. Notice there is room for the wreaths not to be smashed at the top, also.

I was able to fit 7 wreaths very easily on 36 inch dowels. It would be better to have one 1 inch thick rod rather than 3 quarter inch ones, but I used what I had on hand. I can lay plastic over them to keep dust off and store them anywhere with the lid taped shut for the next use or for a yard sale.

If you use a box, be sure to label it so you do not have to open it to know what is in it. I put a label on both the side and top. You may want to put extra bread/garbage wire wraps on both the inside and outside of each opening on the rods to prevent them from sliding should they get accidentally bumped in storage. Since this box goes on top of our other holiday boxes, it should not be a problem for us.

Suggested materials:
  • Sturdy box with open handles   (cardboard scrap)
  • Wooden dowel rod longer than the box   (Amazon or Walmart)
