What can I do to my ugly, stained, popcorn ceiling? Needs to be cheap but look high end. The ceiling goes throughout the house, with open floor plan.
Prime the Stains with Kilz primer. Touch up with paint if needed.
skim coat then paint. Get quotes from plasterer can be a messy job if you never have plastered before. If there are no issues with ceiling job will take two days max

We are buying an old house that had these ceilings, too. No money for the final rehab right now, so we skim coated and then painted to have a better, cleaner look for now.
If removing all the popcorn texture is too much effort, you can just paint the stains with Kilz 2, a latex stain blocker. If it looks like mold, spray the areas with bleach/water.
