How can I fix my glass top stove?

I have a beautiful 5 burner, multi-fuel stove/oven. it has a black glass top that seems to have become "etched". We haven't used anything abrasive on it but it certainly looks like it all around the burner. Is there anything that I can do to fix this unsightly mess? Unfortunately, when I try to take a picture of the top, the flash automatically comes on and the picture doesn't come out.

I suggest first trying some baking soda with just a bit of water so you cn scrub it around, then rinse well. Also, a Mr. Clean sponge should do the trick. I suggest the baking soda first as you're likely to have it handy.

A lot of people recommend using a razor to scrape your glass top, but I am always afraid I will scratch my top. Here is the method I use: Pour a liberal amount of Bar Keeper's Friend on the glass top. Cover with 2-3 layers of paper towels. Pour just enough boiling water on the paper towels to saturate, but not flood the area. Leave over night. In the morning, pour more boiling water to remoisten the paper towels. I then use the paper towels to 'scrub' the glass top. For stubborn spots, I use a scouring pad made for glass cook tops. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Areas that look etched come clean. My glass top comes out looking new every time. Hope this will work for you.

I also have a black glass cook top and the MFG said to use razor blades to remove the gook and then buy the polish cleanser made for the cooktop...this will also prevent further gook when used every day

Dollar Tree razors are a good first step. Next, make a wet paste of baking soda & vinegar. Use a micro cloth to spread on the area. Wait a few minutes & scrub off the goop.

When you use a razor blade to scrape, be sure to keep the surface wet so you don’t scratch it.

I have never had this problem. I clean my glass top after each use. If the top has had a boil or heavy splatter, I apply the proper glass top cleaner thickly and let it sit. I do not use a razor. A scrubber came with my stove, but I first try to use just the first method instead instead of the scrubber. Extra abrasive and scrapping can remove the shine from the top. Mine is older and still shines like new.

Turn each burner on high and burn off much of the scum. Once that is burned off, allow burners to cool and use a cleaner recommended for glass top burners to remove anything left to clean.

Sprinkle Baking Soda on the glass top and spray with vinegar. Put paper towel over and Re spray the paper towels with vinegar. Leave over night. Clean up next morning. Use a razor on wet paper towel to scrap any soiled spots. No chemicals required.

Glass top ranges require regular cleaning. After every use you need to clean the glass. Otherwise, small splatters build up and make the glass look dull. For every day cleaning, once the top has cooled, spray it with a vinegar/water solution and wipe it off. Microfiber cloths are recommended by experts. If there were lots of splatters or a spill, spray the top then sprinkle it with baking soda, and cover that with a damp towel for 15 minutes. You may need some elbow grease, but rub the damp baking soda in circular motions to remove the splatters. Rinse your scrubbing cloth after each section. A few spills might require using a razor blade to remove the residue, but most times the scrubbing is sufficient.

I see that you have a gas range, so this next statement is less applicable to your situation, but could still be relevant. Even if you religiously clean a glass top it's possible for it to get dull where you regularly set pots. To clean these "wear" spots you need a stove cleaner/polish. Cerama Bryte has worked really well for me, but there are lots of brands. Areas that are dull may need repeated applications to remove the grunge. Once the surface shines again you should polish once a month or so to keep the shine.

We clean the stovetop religiously and there is no "gunk" or "grunge" on it, What I'm trying to fix is the "dull" areas. Thank you for the "Cerama Bryte" recommendation. I'll give that a try, too.

How To Clean A Glass Stovetop

    You’ll need:

    Directions:

Pour white vinegar into a small spray bottle. Spray the vinegar evenly onto your stovetop.

Then sprinkle baking soda evenly across your stovetop. The baking soda will react with the vinegar, creating a fizzy cleaner that will loosen up grease and grime.

Next, put a few drops of Dawn into a bucket or your sink, and fill it with hot water.

Dunk your towel into the soapy water, then wring it out lightly so that it’s wet but not dripping.

Spread the wet towel over the stovetop, covering the baking soda and vinegar. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. The steam from the hot towel will help to “steam clean” your stovetop and rehydrate any baked-on gunk, and the dish soap will help cut through greasy messes.

After 15 minutes, remove the towel.

Depending on how dirty the stovetop was when you started, you might want to give it a good scrub to help loosen any stains or grime. A stiff-bristled scrub brush works perfectly for this.

Sharon, hope you had luck cleaning your glass top stove. We have had one for about 10 years and use the razorblade/glass stove cream cleaner method. I do know when I got the stove I was told that when you cook something sweet like candy, or frosting, be sure not to let it boil over because the sweet boiling liquid would etch your glass cook top. So far we have not had a problem.
