How do I paint a mural?
I have a large wall in my hallway and I want to paint a tree with long branches going towards the guest bedroom and the office. I don't know the color or type of paint on there now, so I don't have wiggle room for mistakes. I can't use a decal because the wall is textured. Any suggestions?

Using Vinyl would be your best option. Easy to Remove later on and won't mess up the wall. Even though as you mentioned the wall is textured utilizing a hair dryer and a roller will stick the vinyl quite well to the surface. I recommend visiting an automotive tint / vinyl shop they have machines to cut vinyl into any shape you want. and the vinyl they use to wrap cars is tuff stuff.

Hire an artist. Who knows? You may help out with the project and learn, too. Why put up plastic or fakes when you can have real art on your wall? Support your local artists.
I'm not so sure what sticks well to a textured wall and I'm not even sure a mural would look good on the texture either. And since you say you can't make a mistake maybe you should go for a picture or mirror hanging over a hall table.
I agree with Jane. Your local high school probably has some talented budding artists. My husband is an artist and when he was a teenager he did such painting in a diner his relatives owned. You should pay a nice fee but not nearly what a working artist would charge. Plus it is a win win for a student, gives them a nice start for a portfolio.

I did several murals in my daughter's room and the walls were textured. I used acrylic paints. I'm not that artistic - used an overhead projector to project a sketch (my friend made) onto the wall and then I traced it in and painted it. Since the walls were textured, it meant going slow and making sure that I really worked the paint into the walls. I will need to separately prime the walls if I ever decide to paint over it but I love it so much I probably won't.
