How do I clean the ends of a plastic broom?

I have three brooms that I use in the kitchen, in the garage and outside. They all get dirty and full of gunk. I've tried boiling, soapy water, brake parts cleaner, engine degreaser, etc. I have different levels of success. I know they are not that expensive but it is still a good broom except for the 1 - 2 inches which are dirty. Any suggestions?

Put them in a bucket of warm soapy water. Dawn dish soap would be best to use. Let them soak for a half hour or so. Then take them out of the water and scrub with a hard bristle brush. Rinse with clean water.

You've gotten some good suggestions here. I'd also suggest keeping one "nice" broom for non-gunky cleanup projects. That way, you always have one broom that you can use that you know will be clean.
