Hi Bonnie, Rake the area spread the seed water and wait. If grass never grows well in thee areas, are they shaded - under trees in well trod etc. If so another idea rather than grass may be required in those places such as Paving.
How does vinegar help?
My husband runs a grassing and seeding business so I asked him. He said, "It depends on your location and what type of grass you already have first. Lime at any point, fertilize with high nitrogen during the cold months and repeat with 1000lbs/acre in spring. You may not even need lime. It depends on your soil. You can get it tested by buying a kit at Lowes or on Amazon.
First before anything, the yard must be a loose soil. Root beds need typically 2” depth of loose soil"
