How do I make my closet larger?

My son and I moved into an older home that we both absolutely love; however, we have no closet space to hang up our clothes. Is there a solution to this without spending a fortune? Thanks in advance for your time.

  • No closets at all? You can make an armoire or something similar.

What size is your current closet? Do you want to organize the space available or add to it?

HI, what about using a tall bookcase or shelving unit and a wall to suspend a tension rod for a closet, add another tension rod with a curtain for a door. You could also do this between two bookcases, or a corner area. You could also suspend a strong chain from the ceiling ( hooks into studs, clothes are heavy) to hang hangers on, or two chains to suspend a rod, or even two rods. Dollar stores have over the door hooks . I once used shelf brackets that had curved ends to hold a rod with. I attached them to a wall (any length you want) hung a pipe for a rod to hang clothes on, and a shelf on top of the brackets. Watch the thrift stores for coat racks you can stash in corners. Necessity is the Mother of Invention..... Two china cabinets +one tension rod = closet. :)Good luck

I made a hanging space for clothes years ago by using two bookcases and a set of closet pole holders (the pole fits into one end and the other pole end sets down into the other holder). Walmart or Home Depot has these. Set it up, then measure the length rod/dowel you need and HD will cut it to size. Very sturdy.

I just made over my closet - with a bit of elbow grease we really made it functional. Our closets may not be the same size, but maybe this will give you some ideas: https://rootsandwingsfurniture.com/blog/diy-closet-makeover-final-reveal/
