How can I make a horrible cement court yard floor look pretty?

I would like to start with the unsightly floor, before I work on the rest to make 20 square meter area into a lovely space to sit and read/eat/visit, with lots of potted plants etc. I was thinking a Bohemian/Moroccan theme, but not too overpowering. Maybe with softer colors and some warm fairy lights for summer evenings.

  • Stain the concrete and start with a pretty rug or two and build up from there. You notice the floor, your guests will not if you have a pretty space with plants, lighting and comfortable seating.

Hi there Denise, Here is a link to other projects where people painted their cement floor and stenciled it. This should give you ideas on what to use and how to do it.

You could customize and update the floor by: painting (and stenciling a design) over the surface (using a paint and sealer specifically for exterior concrete); staining the concrete a custom color and/or design using an acid stain (also an easy DIY, but may require a somewhat artistic flair); or cover the entire surface with thin brick or terra cotta pavers. All of these are fairly easy DIY, and detailed information and instructions can be found on youtube as well as multiple other sources online. Before you do any of these projects however, you will need to make any and all necessary repairs and complete the appropriate steps required to prepare the floor for the which everspecific project you decide to complete.

Have you considered painting it? Porches and cement patios and court yards can be made to look very homey and fun. If you click on "explore projects" then "make over" then "out door spaces" you will find many cement patios that have been refurbished. I chose one for you but there are many more: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/patios/faux-flagstone-patio-36755668

Thank you, so much, everyone! I really think painting the surface, maybe like the one Desert Rose added with Faux Flagstone will work really well!

Wayfair.com has plastic, composite and wood composite interlocking tiles. Just snap together and go over your cement. Some are on sale as I looked at them this AM. Easier than painting.

Home Depot carries a product called DeckOver -- can be used to paint concrete as well as decking -- leaves a lovely smooth finish -- could also just put a nice large outdoor rug on it???
