When do you cut back crepe myrtle trees?

I live in Central NC and I have some Crepe Myrtles that need triming. Some branches cross others. I also would like them to Branch out instead of growing up.

You should trim either before the first frost in the fall or after the spring thaw. I've cut mine way back several times and they seem to thrive.

I usually trim mine back in the Fall. They sprout out in the Spring and seem happy. Done this for several years now
