  • Hi Karen,

Start by applying a moss killer to the moss in your lawn. These products normally contain ferrous sulfate or ferrous ammonium sulfate. Once the moss is dead, rake it off of the area that you want to remove it from. Seed the area with your desired grass seed. Keep the seeds moist until the grass has been established again.

Hey thank you so much! I live in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania so I am going to start this project in the spring and hopefully on dry days! Do you know if the moss killer would be harmful to pets? I am sure it will probably say on the product when I buy it! Have you used any particular brand that you found worked well? Thank you again!

I would shallow till up the mossy section and plant grass seed and put hay over it for cover. Then water it daily until it comes up and water it a couple times a week. You can also get the "spray" foam with seeds in it that protects and feeds grass seed to get it started. Our neighbors used it so we intend to do the same. It is great for bare patches and places killed by pets etc. He bought Hydro Mousse Liquid lawn. There are other brands but this seems the best. It is the one we intend to use. If you cannot find it in your home improvement stores you might order it. Fall is best time to plant grass because weeds have died back and give it a better chance, but you can plant in the cool of the spring time. Hope this helps!

The moss is there because the area won't support whatever has been planted there before. Moss likes moist shaded areas, most grass doesn't. Keep in mind that you'll need to choose a grass seed suited for the situation you have, and don't be disappointed if you can't get grass to grow in this spot. There are lots of other ground covers that will take foot traffic and will grow where grass often doesn't, a local nursery could offer advice. Good luck!
