How do I update my fireplace with a very limited amount of money?

I really would like to update my fireplace but don't have that much money. I don't want to loose the mantle at all , but would like to modernize the fireplace!! Any suggestions or ideas that I can do with little to no money? I forgot to mention that my living room is very small !! Please help ! :-)

This is the fireplace that I am talking about , the tiles are like a granite stone , I think they are that is but not positive.

What is your fireplace made of? Brick, stone, granite, etc? A few pictures would help us help you.

  Thank you Shore grandmom , I believe it's granite tiles but not 100% sure. I did post a picture of it. I will post a couple more.:-)

  It looks like travertine from the pictures and it looks like the fireplace is set in a little from the stone. You really can't put something on top because it would stick out to far and I don't think it would look right painted. But, you can paint the gold on the fireplace which really dates it. I really love the mantel so I understand why you want to keep it.

Is it a brick fireplace? Or a large, full mantel? The easiest thing to do could be to paint it! It's the easiest way to completely change the look without spending a bunch of money.
