Have you checked the owners manual? It may have specific cleaning instructions. What kind of stove is it?

Sounds like you have a black enamel stove top. BTDT. Theyre a PIA. First you need to get all the grease off. Mix Ammonia and water in a spray bottle to cut the grease. Use paper towels and keep changing them so you don't redeposit grease. Then go over it with Windex and paper towels. After you get all the grease off to avoid creating streaks you need to use a microfiber cloth to dry and buff the surface. This will keep water or soap residue from drying in visible patterns. Treat it like its a mirror. If you see a smudge spritz a tiny bit Windex and buff it dry.

I use homemade dawn dish soap in a spray bottle. Add a few drops in the bottle and add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the bottle, shake and spray the top down, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe up with a paper towel or I use a clean white towel rag, works better and doesn't leave white paper towel fuzzies. Get yourself a couple of clean rags to you get the perfect shine you are achieving. Mark your bottle white black magic marker stove top cleaner and keep nearby for touch ups!

You can also use this cleaner on the knobs, BUT DO NOT USE IT ON STAINLESS STEEL. NEVER EVER USE VINEGAR ON STAINLESS STEEL, IT WILL CAUSE RUST MARKS!!! And you will be in big trouble
