    where do you live?

  • Hi Cheri,

The best time to transplant roses is in the FAll when they are dormant. But you can transplant basically anytime of the year being sure it gets enough water. I would try to avoid the hot Summer months which would be more traumatic for the plant.

Rose bushes are sensitive to shock. Never move in cold, winter months. Wait till early spring and after the threat of frost/weather.

Hi Cheri! Well, best time is in the spring. Just make sure to respect the depth when planting them and they are heavy feeders, and love the sun. Watering will be crucial in the first year, so a good soaking of the soil, not the foliage, in the morning at least once a week. The reason being is we don't want the roots to grow up to get the water, a good watering will make the roots grow down. The foliage should not be watered (except by rain of course) since it could cause diseases. Some varieties are more prone than others. And, roses like to be planted with other roses. yeah, I know sounds crazy, but plant it alone, or with other roses. There are many different hybrids now which are less fuss and go to a reputable nursery and they will be able to give you the best advice for your grow zone. Ahhhh, now to take some time and smell the roses...….. ;-)

Roses are best transplanted in the late winter or very early spring before they begin to leaf out. If they have leafed and not budded, you can still do it. They love lots of sunshine so be sure to plant them on the sunny side of a building and mulch them if you live in a dry climate.
