Shirley from LilyPond Vintage is joining us today to show you how to create a coastal finish on furniture using All-in-One Decor Paint and Texture Powder.

Did you know you can create a “textured” coastal finish easily with Country Chic Paint Products?

Coastal, beachy looks are very popular right now and who doesn’t like the sights and sounds of the beach?

In this tutorial, you will learn how to mix & use Texture Powder, layer paint and use a dry brush technique to create a coastal beach finish with Country Chic Paint Products.

Supplies:

  • Stir sticks for mixing the paint products
  • Small mixing dish or plastic cup
  • Synthetic paint brushes
  • 120 grit sanding block
  • Paper towel
  • Lint free clothes for distressing & dust collection
  • Country Chic Paint’s All-in-One Decor Paint: Sunday Tea, Bliss, Pebble and Vanilla Frosting
  • Country Chic Paint’s Texture Powder

How to Create a Coastal Finish on Furniture in 6 Easy Steps

Step 1) SAND THE SURFACE OF YOUR PIECE

The first step to creating a coastal finish is to prepare the surface you’ll want to lightly sand your piece down. Be sure to get legs and other nooks and crannies, but keep in mind it doesn’t need to be perfect. Simply sand the surface of your piece enough to get it slightly rough. If your piece is raw wood make sure it is clean & free of dust before painting.

Step 2) PAINT BASE COAT OF PAINT

Stir paint to ensure it is mixed well. Use a soft synthetic brush to paint the first coat of paint Sunday Tea. Allow to dry 2 hours before adding a second coat of paint if needed. Dip your brush into the paint so you are covering no more that half way up the bristles. Hold your paint brush at a 45-degree angle and apply a little pressure when painting the surface. Apply an even coat, but not too generous to avoid drips and runs.

Step 3) MIX TEXTURE POWDER

While waiting for the base coat of paint to dry measure off some Country Chic Paint Bliss and pour it in a plastic cup. Measure off the same amount of Texture Powder and add it to the cup with paint. Use a stir stick to mix well until you have a buttercream icing consistency. We recommend you start with a 1:1 ratio, however, you can always add some extra paint or extra powder if your mixture is too thick or too thin for your liking.

Step 4) APPLY TEXTURE PAINT MIX

Using a paint brush, dab the textured paint onto your project to create a random looking texture. It doesn’t have to look perfect. Now, let it dry for 15-20 minutes until it starts to dry and tack up. Then, use your paint brush again to gently smooth down the finish. You don’t want to remove all of the texture, just some of the higher points. Let it dry completely (approximately 12 hours) before moving on to the last steps.

Step 5) PAINT OVER USING DRY BRUSH TECHNIQUE

First, dab your brush into the paint and tap it on paper to “unload” your brush. You want almost no paint left on your brush. Next, in long even strokes apply the paint to your wood, going back and forth with your paint brush. Do this until your piece has a light coat of the Vanilla Frosting and Pebble Beach paint color and let it dry.

Step 6) DISTRESS PIECE

After your final paint coat has dried for two hours you can use your favorite distressing technique to reveal some of the paint layer underneath! You can easily distress using a damp cloth or by using a fine sanding block to create the look you want.
