Decorate A Hand Mirror Without Using Mod Podge

The dollar store has been stocking large hand mirrors forever and I have one that I keep in the bathroom for those times when I need to check how my hair looks at the back. It has a hole in the handle for hanging on the wall, which is what I do to keep it off the limited counter space.

I've always thought the back of this mirror was the perfect place for some artwork. Here's what I did:

This mirror is about 7 1/2-inches by 6-inches, but you could use any mirror with a plain back, as that's what will be decorated.

The supplies I used:

  • picture (I used the front of a greeting card)
  • a roll of clear plastic
  • pencil
  • scissors

I found the roll of clear plastic in the stationary aisle of my local dollar store. It's original purpose is as a book cover.

First, I trimmed the picture I was using, removing the white border and made sure it was a good fit for the back of the mirror. In retrospect, I probably would have rounded the edges of the picture.

If you're using the mirror on a dresser, placing the picture like this would be fine. As I was going to hang mine on the wall, I would need to turn the picture the other way on.

Place the mirror on the underside of the clear plastic roll and trace around it.

Cut out the shape of the mirror from the plastic roll. Cut a little bit inside the line, so you won't have any excess to trim once it's on the mirror. Use a bit of tape under the picture to hold it in place while you position the clear plastic piece.

Separate the plastic from the backing and carefully cover the picture on the back of the mirror. The film is easy to re-position but once it sticks to the picture, you may damage it if you try to pull it off again, so try to get the clear film lined up with the edges of the mirror the first time.

Here's how my mirror looks hanging on the bathroom wall. I now have an extra piece of artwork to enjoy when I'm not using the mirror. icon

How will it stand up in a steamy bathroom? I don't know, but I'm willing to bet it will do just fine. You could hang it close to a dresser in the bedroom, if you don't want/need it in the bathroom.

This house number sign has been hanging on the wall outside my house all winter and it's holding up just fine. I made it using a pre-cut wood sign, some white craft paint, large numbers and the same clear plastic covering I used on the mirror.

Suggested materials:

  • Roll of clear plastic book cover   (dollar store)

I just found you on Hometalk, which surprises and delights me, because I love seeing Dollar store projects!

You said you would probably round the edges of the picture to match the edges of the mirror. I agree it would look better, so I'm wondering why you didn't? Thanks, and thanks for sharing all your projects!!
