How do I add a backsplash?

We moved into a new home and there is Formica about 2 or 3 feet up the walls around the bathtub. Am I able to add Tile for a backsplash on top of the Formica or do I need to remove it all first? Thank you for your help

Honestly, for the best results, removing to is what you should do. But it is probably glued on, so it would be a major undertaking because the cement board, greenboard or whatever they put behind it will probably be ruined. If this is just a temporary fix, then go for it. If you're planning a major redo, I'd suggest that you just live with it and save your money until you can do it right.

Don't remove it. Too much damage to the wall to repair. You can tile over it. Do not use thinset. It will not stick. Use tile mastic.
If it were me, I would get one of those beautiful peel and stick back splashes! They can be cut and go on very easy.
