How do you clean a water cooler?

I have a water cooler that heats and cools water. It takes a 3 gallon or 5 gallon jug. I've noticed when it get very low that the water has a slight musty odor! Is there anyway to clean it?

vinegar put some vinegar in one of the empties before you return or refill run it thru then rinse it;put the used vinegar in kitchen drain, tub drain and toilet
