How do I get my vegetables to grow?

I always buy the plants and at my old house had no trouble getting vegetables before the frost. 2 summers at my new house just 10 min away from before and I got a few tomatoes and that is it. Broccoli, brussle sprouts, peppers, nothing else grew before the frost came. Any tips?

Check the soil as that most likely is your problem and make sure your vegetable garden gets at least 6 hours of direct sun..

Contact your County Ag. Extension Office. They have soil kits for about $10.00 that will tell you the composition of your soil and what it needs. The people there are also very helpful.

I could be that the soil in the yard at your new house is lacking in sufficient nutrients due to having been used for growing over many years, without receiving proper fertilization. With the soil testing that 2dogal mentioned, when you test the soil, you will be able to find out which nutrients in may be lacking.

Or it could also be that the soil is not pure enough, which in this case, may need some replacement with new garden-growing-rich topsoil.

  • Test your soil. Most likely lacking necessary nutrients. Amend with good compost.

I agree with the folks above. It sounds like you have poor soil at your new home. You might try some raised beds with new soil and amendments. That would make it easier to tend as well as solve the poor soil issue.

I will def test the soil esp if it is only $10. I thought for sure this soil would be good because I never seen so much dog crap in my life. I moved in when it was buried under the snow and we were joking about how our plants were going to be huge and very prolific... but it wasn't the case lol
