The project you are referring to was misleading. They didn't paint the tub at all, just the tile around a whirlpool tub, then stenciled it. Believe me you don't want a black tub. Constant mess.
Kelli is right, a black colored bathtub shows every single speck of anything that is not as black as the tub. We have a friend who has a black bathroom sink and could not wait to change it out soon after he bought the house.
The tiles were scrubbed, primed (2 coats), and finally painted black with white stencils, looked nice.
you will need sand it first then 2 layers of black paint. The sanding part is very important so don't hesitate to sand as much as possible
