Watch out for a unique shape or size when you thrift shop! That's hack number 9 in the How to Thrift Shop series, and it's the very hack I used to snag an old lamp that I repurposed into a candle stand.

Here's how:

I found this piece of a lamp at a thrift store and was immediately intrigued by it's unusual shape.

I've done several thrift lamp projects, and they nearly always involve taking them apart and repurposing them into something else. So the fact that this lamp wasn't really functional as a lamp anymore was no problem.

First step - take it apart! The center metal rods screwed right out, and that gold center piece...well, it reminds me so much of a Christmas bell I remember from my childhood. I stuck it aside for a future project!

Paint, paint, always paint!

I used a color pretty similar to the original, but a fresh coat made all the difference.

It also helped make that center screw less obvious.

For the top, I used a red plate. I think the bright, glossy color was a great contrast with the dark base.

I attached it using E6000, turned it upside down, and let it cure for a day.

Next, I added a faux boxwood topiary to the base. The drain hole in the pot fit right over the screw fitting, which not only covered it up, but also gave the pot a little more stability.

The color combination was really popping now!

Finally, I added some LED candles to the top, and it was finished!

These candles are great, and I love to set them on flicker - such a pretty candle glow, and no worries of them puddling wax all over the plate.

I hope you're inspired to look for the unusual on your next thrift trip. Stop by the blog for more details on the hack, and to get your FREE Thrift Shopping Cheat sheet with all 10 in the series.
