If there's one thing you can count on being a thrift shops, it's furniture!

Look for a sturdy piece and you've got a great project just waiting to happen.

Here's how I updated a plain oak dinette chair:

We've had this chair for a while. In fact, we have two of them that we bought from a thrift shop several years ago when we needed just a couple extra chairs.

I've been using it at my desk, but that outdated finish was really bugging me, so I decided to give it a makeover to match the rest of the room.

I know a lot of people swear by chalk painting right over a finished surface, but I prefer to sand first so I went over the chair with a fine grit sandpaper to scratch off the finish and any accumulated dirt, then wiped it with a damp cloth and let it dry.

For the main color, I used Deco-Art's Everlasting Chalky Finish paint.

Already looking better!

I wanted a girly splash of pink, and used Innocence for the spindles.

I love that new personality busting out.

And for a little glam, I used Silver Matte Metallics on the leg details.

Just the right amount of glow.

Finally, I coated the whole chair in Creme wax to protect its gorgeous new finish.

What a difference a bit of paint can make, right?
