Snake Away products (crushed up mothballs) are just formaldyhyde saturated products. You don't want them close to your hay bales. Too close to your food. Make a boundary away from bales. Snakes don't like to cross it. Another safer solution for snake repelling is granulated sulfur. Will not last as long as Snake Away products but the repelling part is the same (they don't like to cross it as it has a burn effect on their underbelly, they just avoid the area) but it is much safer for soil.
