I have been thinking about outdoor spaces a lot lately, with the weather warming up (hopefully soon). We have a large wall on our front porch and I was inspired by these pallet projects and I thought I could use wood and make an American flag!

My husband was in the Marine Corps so he was in full support of this project.

Materials:

  • wood pallet disassembled or 1X4 pieces of wood (whichever you prefer)
  • Red and blue spray paint
  • Screws and drill
  • Miter saw
  • Star Stamp
  • White Acrylic paint
  • Polyurethane

That's it! You don't need so much! I did this project easily in one weekend. You can use wood pallets that have been disassembled. Make sure you aren't using the wrong kinds, the ones with chemicals in it. I am afraid I won't know the difference so I prefer to just use wood that I purchased from the home improvement store.

Step one, cut the wood to the correct length using the miter saw. Make sure you keep to the 2:3 ratio for the flag. Those are the proper dimensions for the American flag. The length you chose depends on the amount of wall space you have.

Step 2, screw a support piece of wood along the back to hold all the wood pieces together.

Step 3, Flip the wood over and put some plastic underneath to prevent paint from getting on the floor underneath. Tape off stripes, under the tape will be the bare wood which will be your white stripes. Tape off the blue square and use paper or magazines to cover where the blue will go. Spray the stripes your favorite red.

Step 4, once the red is dry remove the tape and cover the stripes with paper or magazines and spray off the blue section.

Once all the paint is dry use the stamp to put stars on the blue section.

Now it's time to use your artistic freedom. You can add some stain to age it a little. You can use sand paper to distress it a little. It's totally up to you!

Finish it off with some polyurethane to protect the flag from the elements, if you are putting it outside. And now you have a great flag and can proudly show off your American spirit!
