Many modern kitchens today have an oven with a sleek glass stove top. They are minimalist in design and boast of being easier to clean up after cooking than traditional stoves with their drip pans and burner grates.

But when that pasta water boils over or when the kids insist on helping to scramble the eggs, that modern glass stove top can quickly become a grimy, grit-filled eyesore. Even the smallest spill or splatter will show up on any glass stove top!

Often times, those unsightly spots of burnt-on food require more than a simple wiping down of the stove top. That’s when some crafty DIY glass stove top cleaners and a little elbow grease brings a scorched stove top back to its pristine, brand new state. Using natural ingredients you probably already have in the pantry, learn how to clean a glass stove top without scratching it and keep your kitchen looking its sparkling best...until the next meal!

Glass Stove Top Cleaning Tips

When your cooking surface is lacking that cook-on-me luster, it’s probably time to clean the glass stove top. But before you set out to get rid of those food stains and dark burn marks, it’s important to keep these cleaning tips in mind:

  • Wait to clean the glass stove top until it is cool. You don’t want to put any cleaners on a hot stove top.
  • Consult the stove manufacturers instructions as to how to best clean the glass top as well as whatever cleaners they recommend.
  • Avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaners on the stove top, such as steel wool, which can scratch the glass surface.
  • Apply gentle pressure when cleaning to avoid cracking the glass stove top.

How to Clean a Stove Top with Products from Home

Sometimes the best cleaning products turn out to be products meant for something altogether different. Like toothpaste. Who knew you could use toothpaste to clean a glass stove top?

Familiar with the old cleaning solution of making a baking soda and water paste to scour stains and marks, Anna M. discovers that she can just as easily use white toothpaste with baking soda in it as a DIY glass stove top cleaner.

In place of making her own baking soda and water cleaning paste, Anna M. smears the toothpaste on all the burned on food areas on her cool cooktop. She lets it sit and penetrate for 15 minutes. She then uses an old toothbrush to gently scrub the stains off the glass stove top.

Clearissa, a self-proclaimed cleaning freak, is beside herself with happiness when her sleek glass stove top oven was installed. She soon realized that the glass cooktop requires some (easy) maintenance to keep it looking shiny, spotless, and streak-free.

After years of using store-bought chemical glass stove top cleaners, Clearissa learns that she can easily wipe down the cooktop with a soapy dishrag to remove any loose food particles and sprinkles baking soda over the entire stove top.

She sprays the baking soda with white vinegar until it bubbles and lets the chemical reaction sit for 15 minutes. She wipes down the entire glass stove top with a wet dishcloth.

Sometimes the best cleaners are simple, inexpensive, and can be found in the pantry!

I have a glass top stove my second. For a quick clean I spray the top with a mix of 3/4

vinegar, 1/4 water. I then go over it with a Scrub Daddy. This does a decent job quickly.

Burned on food can be removed carefully with a razor. I like quick. I do use a commercial

product occasionally. Things may have changed. My first stove indicated soap was no

was a no, no. Now you have plenty of choices.

When your headlights get foggy, you can use white toothpaste to clean them, too! They will eventually get foggy again, but I paid over $30 to get them "professionally" cleaned and they returned to the foggy state after a month or so, too. So a $3 tube of toothpaste and a good rubbing is a much better deal!
