You could place some cornmeal near the planters. Ants eat it, but they can't tolerate it. Or you could put ant traps next to your planters. Ants take the bait and carry it back to the nest, and hopefully kill the colony. I've used Amdro baits with great success.

They are getting in plant sometimes to eat the liquid aphids or spider mites make when they are eating your plants, they also pollinate the plants or collect pollen or other pests to take back to nest. Best way to be rid of them is Amdro Ant Bait. Put it on trail to take back to nest, kills whole colony. Don't put on mound sometimes it just confuses them and they won't use the entrance or even pick up bait. https://bainpestcontrol.com/blog/5-myths-ants-debugged/ Amdro is poison so when you put on trail cover up for awhile til ants are gone only takes about 12hrs or less I just use an over turned flower pot just don't block trail & you only need a little of the granules.

thank you so much ! Can’t wait to try it ... I usually put ant killer on my yard and it seems to help some but not around my planters

Many ants, including fire ants, are attracted to cornmeal, but it won't kill them. Instead, the ants just gather up the crumbs and happily march themselves back to their nest. Ants follow a scent trail, so spreading cornmeal on the ground will disrupt the scent and make it hard for other ants to find the trail, but this is a far cry from killing the ants.

      Cornmeal Plus Poison

Cornmeal plus a little bit of ant poison is another story entirely. Mix cornmeal with a slow-acting liquid insecticide or boric acid to make a paste. Slow-acting insecticides are the most effective way of controlling ants, according to the Colorado State University Extension. Choose one made specifically for ants for best results, and add it a little at a time to the cornmeal until you have a thick paste.

      Why It Works

Worker ants only feed on liquids. They take solid food back to the nests, where it is given to larvae. Then, the larvae convert it to liquid and feed it back to the worker ants. Straight boric acid or insecticide will kill ants, but the worker ants will eat it rather than taking it back to the nest because it is in liquid form. Making a paste ensures the poison will get to the nest. You may also lay a trail of straight cornmeal to lure the ants to the poison.

Oh okay thanks ! I have ants really bad in the summer months

  • HI Judy - Those little buggers are relentless, aren't they?!? This is the most effective method and all-natural spray DIY that we use with ants. It's mostly for indoors, but you can use it outside just have to reapply more often. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

Thanks I’ll have to try that especially in around my kitchen counter

  • I use packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.

I read this from : Itsmemic

Medicated powder from the Dollar Tree. It has eucalyptus in it...menthol...I puff it around my homes foundation..and inside under my birdcages in the cracks under moldings. Work immediately and they never come back. I do this at the first sign of ants..in one day..GONE. The powder is in a very large container and lasts quite awhile too !! And smells great !

Not toxic to my birds OR dog

What if you make a barrier around the house.

I did some research, since we know what works for one person doesn't always work for another. I found this site and it's pretty informative. I know some tips you may not be able to use but there are some good ones also that will hopefully help.

Ants are so weird. One time I found them inside the freezer in the garage!! What would possess them to go inside a freezer only to die? They must have sent signals back or something ~ there were no ant trails only a freezer full of dead ants. Hasn't happened since.
