How should I paint my kitchen cabinets?

Hello, So I started painting my kitchen cabinets as you can see. Not happy tho. What should I do?* What colors would you suggest? I really am not a fan of the light colors. Was thinking a little darker.* Should I stay with just the different variations of blue or incorporate other colors (see pic above sink) This is obviously not professional and I am wanting to be done today. Any tips on how to paint kitchen cabinets are much appreciated.

Hello Melissa! You can't rush painting your cabinets! I don't know what you used to paint your cabinets or how your prepped them but prepping for paint and using the right paint is critical to a successful finish. I like your idea of blue. It looks like you will need another coat or two of paint. I would use a latex paint in an enamel finish. I see that you are trying to mimic the colors of the water in your painting on the wall. Would you be happier if you just continued with the darker blue and had them a solid blue rather than variegated? I do like the darker blue color. I think they would look pretty with just the darker blue and it would coordinate with the picture if you are leaving the picture on the wall.

By looking at the way the colors are covering, it makes me think that there is something on top of the primer that you said was done a couple of months ago. With kitchen cupboards you also need to make sure you've cleaned them well with a degreaser such as TSP. That will help the paint to stick. Also, it's much more lasting to use several thinner coats of paint. It's even better if you take the time to lightly sand each coat then clean with a tack cloth before adding the next coat.
It's hard to tell from your picture, but if you're using a latex paint, you'll have more success with paint made for cabinets in a semi-gloss, satin or possibly an eggshell finish.
I know you said that you just want to get this project done, but you'll have more success if you can take your time and do it in a way that will last. The tutorial GK posted shows all of the steps you should take. All of those steps are important so that the project will be worth the work. Wishing you the best.

Hello Gk and everyone!! I was in the hospital for 4 days and been taking it easy after I got out, but I finally did my cabinets.
Nothing crazy or super fancy (or professional!) But I like the color much better!
They look nice. I love the nautical look with the blue and white, especially the white knobs! Glad you got them done and hope you’re feeling much better after your hospital stay.
You could paint over them with chalk paint (not chalkboard!) so you would not have to sand. When dry, follow with a coat of polyurethane.
Light blue looks great, I am aware this is how the cupboards look before being painted. And in my opinion, light blue looks great, you should totally consider it. If you don't know what to choose then try consulting a professional, a designer would be perfect. When I bought the cupboards for my kitchen I got it from dhschmidt.com, the colors were great so I didn't have to worry about repainting it. As a conclusion, in order not to regret your decision always go for light shades which contrast.
