Learn how to build a simple and beautiful fireplace mantel. You can turn a simple pine board into a gorgeous mantel that appears to be a solid piece of wood! If you love this project, find more DIY ideas on my blog, Love & Renovations.

Start by cutting your pine boards to length (you'll need two at the desired length of your mantel and two cut to the width of the long pieces). Once you've cut them down, use a table saw set at a 45-degree angle to miter 3 of the 4 sides of each board.

When you're done the boards should look something like this.

NOTE: This is an optional step that will make the finished mantel look like one piece of wood. You can leave the edges straight, but the seams will be more visible.

Next, you'll tape the boards together from the front (or what will be the outside of the mantel) to create one long line. Flip the boards over and add glue, then fold everything up to create a box, as shown below

Once everything has been glued, it should look like a box with one of the long sides missing.

Fill in any gaps with wood filler, then thoroughly sand and stain the piece.

Finally, you'll hang the mantel using a ledger board - simply attach a long 2X4 to the wall and rest the mantel on it, then drill it in place from the top.

Then, you're ready to enjoy your new mantel!
