Hi Bettina, I don't see why you can't just pretend that wallpaper isn't there and just cover it right over with your new sheetrock. You will have to first find the studs though. I would use a stud finder and drawer a straight line from ceiling to floor before hanging your new rock.

The 1/4 inch sheetrock should be fine over the old.

You should be okay, as long as you can mark your studs and use long screws. Since you are covering them up, you might want to "bust through" on the old to make sure. Then mark on the ceiling at floor with painter's tape.

In re: the old wallpaper, did you try perforating with a paper tiger and saturating with an adhesive remover? I've removed some that was 30+ years old with that method.

Steaming never worked for me. I had to use an adhesive remover I made from fabric softener. Good luck with your project.

Another tip, when you are finishing the sheet rock you can finish with a damp sponge rather than sanding. It produces a finished product as good as sanding and you don't have the fine dust everywhere.

You should be fine. As long as it's flat. My crew and I covered popcorn ceilings with 1/4' drywall.
