How to rid my wicker lingerie chest of a musty (mold) smell?

I purchased a wicker lingerie chest that had been painted black. Until I got it in my home, I did not realize the awful musty smell. I tried bleach, peroxide and alcohol (separately). Any more suggestions?

It's not really the time of year for it but I always put musty objects in bright sunlight to destroy any mould spores and give them a good airing. UV light is great at disinfecting anything that is lingering

  • Vinegar! Plain old white vinegar. Wipe the drawers out. If you can, lay them in the sun for a day or two. Baking soda (just like you do for fridge and freezer), charcoal, crumpled newspaper and fresh coffee grounds all absorb odor. Set bowls in the drawers until the odor is gone. I use fresh bay leaves and lavender in my drawers.

  • Boy, musty is one of the hardest odors to remove. Here's what I'd do... Take all the drawers out, and lay it out on the patio in the sun. Then I'd completely saturate it with this odor eliminator spray... inside, outside, top, bottom, sides, every surface, trying to get the spray into the weave of the wicker. If that doesn't work, then I don't think anything will. This spray is the best odor eating spray I've ever used. It doesn't add perfume, it really neutralizes the odor.

AS Naomi said...if you use charcoal it needs to be activated. I use fresh Sweet Marjoram from plant along with Rosemary as well as the Bay leaves and Lavender these plants not only make it smell better but are bug deterrents

Spray with vinegar and warm water solution. The next day sprinkle baking soda and let set for another day and you should set to go.

There’s a product called FreshWave. Comes in gel, spray, many forms. Restoration companies use it after fires. You can get it online, at Bed, Bath, Beyond, Amazon. Has always defeated any odor I’ve tried it on, including mold. All natural.

after Katrina we had a lingering funky whiff to our frig - we had been lucky & cleaned it out & emptied it before we had power off too long - we poured drops here & there along/behind the gasket of the frig door of vanilla extract (we had tried vinegar previously, but a little whiff remained so then we used the vanilla extract) - vanilla extract can also be put on cotton balls in little dishes
