You will want to place the feeder high enough that the dog will not reach or scare them. You can make your own nectar of 1 part sugar/4 parts water, boil, then refrigerate.

use native plants that are red, orange or purple, with tubular flowers. Suggest honeysuckle, bee balm, coral bells, columbines, lupines and some annuals like fucshia, petunias.

I love my humming birds too. I live in AZ and have two honeysuckle plants by my patio and two feeders hanging from the roof. I have found that they like my cheep plastic feeder better than the fancy g;lass one, not sure why. And they love the honeysuckle plant. Once the start coming they will keep coming back and maybe bring friends. Enjoy your hummers

Cute fur baby. Call or visit your local nursery to get more information for your area and project . They will have all your information and the plants you need to attract the humming bird s.

  • Love your dog! Just hang out a feeder or two. Here is how to make the nectar.

You will need to choose what will grow in your Zone. I am in Zone 9 and have 5 feeders out year round. My hummers LOVE pineapple sage, I grow 3 plants in various spots in the yard just for them. There are 6+ dogs in my yard and they don't care. I have 2 feeders placed in the front yard for the young and timid birds.

You don't have to add red food coloring to your homemade nectar. Buy a hummingbird feeder than is red glass or plastic! I always hang fucshias nearby the hummingbird feeders.

So I like saving money as much as anyone, but I think I prefer my waxed paper disposable hummingbird feeders. I worry that I won't keep do-it-yourself feeders clean enough. They seem to like the red feeder tube and the brightly flower-covered packaging, too.

And I am also a big fan for all kinds of birds, with planting shrubs and flowers that encourage them to hang around and dine. This keeps hummers happy, whether or not I remembered to change the empty. There is a great book by Sally Roth on planting different parts of your garden to encourage different birds.

Enjoy the birds. And is that sweet old dog an Akita? he reminds me of one I loved.

Hummingbirds love trumpet vines, colrain red bee balms which multiply & are mold resistant & butterfly bush. I found they also like a place up high to rest where they'll be safe so they don't have to flap their wings continually. Enjoy your birdwatching!

It sounds like disposable feeders but I didn't post it so I'm not sure.

Keep in mind that feeders will be most appealing to birds only when the water is fresh. Do not let it sit too long as it will get stale. Change frequently for maximum attractiveness to the wee flyers.

I have a bunch of feeders out all year round here in Oregon, and they love the red fuschia bushes the best, and my camelias. If you have bears, you will have to put them on a pulley system and hang the feeders high out of reach.

Try also planting flowers that hummingbirds love... Honeysuckle, Coral Bells etc. Red monarda. The hummingbirds come to my yard in the late afternoon , early evening and just love to go to the coral bells
