Hi, Nan: Oh what a legacy! Wash by hand in cool water. I would start with plain water and jostle around to get dust out and then in fresh cool water add mild liquid soap, such as Ivory and let sit for a short time, then swish around and rinse really well. Squeeze gently to get water out. I would put layers of towels on a table or bed and spread the table cloth out to air dry. You might need to iron gentle with cool iron, no steam, but if you spread it out well that will probably not be necessary.

Pat has described it perfectly and I have an extra hint for such heirlooms. Put it in your dryer on air dry only for about ten minutes as this removes the dust first making it much easier to use a very mild soap to finish the job. Hopes this saves you lots of time and keeps your fingers from freezing lol.
