a lot will depend on your local environment --- they don't like WET -- will do best with superb drainage; full to mostly full sun, use a commercial 'cactus mix' potting soil instead of your local 'dirt' ... start small, add to it thru the years if you find it enjoyable. Be careful about collecting 'native' rocks -- be sure it's legal in your area; or purchase a few 'statement' rocks from a landscape company.
