Peggy: put in a safety bar because it's safe... not attractive. Put it in a place that you'd grab it the most!

We didn't have a stud in just the right place so we cut a rectangle out of the drywall where we needed the safety bar. Then put a piece of wood into the opening. The wood is secured to the studs and the bar is secured to the wood. I'll try and post a picture, but it doesn't look bad - it became a feature element with the decorative wood background instead of just a bar stuck into the wall. It's there for safety, yes, but it looks attractive - and it's secure in the place where we needed it, not necessarily where the studs are. Killed two birds with one stone. We wound up doing the same thing in the guest bath.

It's just what it is. Need to worry how it can best serve you.

Our shower walls are covered in large slabs of marble-look quartz. The predominant color is white. We painted our grab bars with white Krylon and they fade into the background. We sprayed some paint onto a paper plate and used an artist size brush to cover the screw tops.
