You have many options. Since it is muddy, I would consider regrading the yard for proper run off then plant a no maintenance ground cover like white clover that never needs mowing if you don't want to. You can install drains to move the water along. Or just place landscape fabric down and place a couple inches of gravel on top. If it were me, I would regrade the yard and use clover.
