If I understand your question correctly, you could tape off a large square or rectangle using painter's tape. Paint inside the square with 2-3 coats of chalkboard paint (not chalk paint) then let it dry. Remove the painter's tape. You will need to use the side of the chalk to rub on the paint when it is dry to help keep ghost writing from showing in the chalkboard paint.

You can paint your wall with chalk board paint. Chalk "board" paint is NOT chalk paint so don't get confused! Chalk board paint is a paint made to be written on with chalk. Rustoleum makes a chalk board paint and you can find it at your local home imprivement store like Menards, Lowes, and Home Depot. It is quite smelly to use and it will take several coats. If you don't want to paint your whole wall with the chalkboard paint you could tape off a large rectangle the size you want and just use the chalkboard paint inside the rectangle. I have used this before on cabinet doors to make a chalkboard surface. It works well.

You could also add a cute frame around it to make it decorative.
