    Hi Dar,

That is a very informative link from Holly, lots of great suggestions.

The method I rely on is companion plants for what you have planted. An example of something that has worked very well is planting Marigolds and tomatoes together, the Marigolds repel pests that would "bother" a tomato.

If you are interested in this suggestion, go to Google and look up "companion plants", it will give you lots of advice.

  • Bugs are nothing but protein. In other countries they eat them as part of their diet. I wouldn't worry about it much. To ward off pests, do companion planting. If you grow tomatoes, grow marigolds and basil. For Kale, plant marigolds, nastirtiums, herbs, cabbage. For lettuce, beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes and strawberries.

When I taught Home Economics, I learned to wash lettuce and other greens well and then soak in a large container of salt and water. About 1/4 cup salt to 1 gal. water, for 10 min. Then drain and rinse in plain water. It's amazing that very tiny dead bugs would float to the top of the salty water. We learned to scrub other vegetables and fruits with liquid castile soap and a vegetable brush, then rinse well. Good luck!
