I am assuming it's a wood door. If you just want a newer, fresher look on the wood, try to wipe some tung oil to the whole door.
There is always the option to paint it. Most major hardware stores will let you know what paint is better for your door. I use regular latex paint with primer in its formula.

I saw this idea on the Jenna Sue blog (http://blog.jennasuedesign.com/2016/01/the-easiest-flat-panel-door-update-ever/). Add some paneling, and paint over a nice stain!
