The ceiling has numerous coats of paint and the popcorn is very hard to scrape.

If you don't feel like the difficult job of trying to scrape of the "popcorn", consider having a carpenter cover your ceilings with decorative ceiling tiles, or sheets of bead board paneling.

Yikes I feel for you! Once that stuff has been painted it is next to impossible to get off. More than one coat forget it. The best way to handle it is toget new wallboard, coverthe crappy stuff up . You will have to mud and tape but when you are done you will have perfect, smooth ceilings and no bruised knuckles, and a lot less use of words like crappy.

A company called talissa sells mylar and styrofoam panels which can be very easily applied over popcorn ceilings with no more nails latex glue. The styrofoam panels can be painted before or after being applied to ceiling. Old popcorn ceilings may have lead or even asbestos in the plaster so be careful.

Hello Connie! I removed the popcorn ceilings in my house that had been painted over numerous times as well. I didn't find it difficult at all. Time consuming-yes. If you tried to scrape the popcorn when it was dry it may seem difficult to get it off. Try wetting it down with water in a spray bottle. I just used a old window cleaner bottle and worked on small sections at a time. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/how-to-remove-popcorn-ceilings-34507258?expand_all_questions=1

Have it tested first, some blown texture has asbestosis in it and you don't want to breath that stuff

Spray water on it. Wait a couple of minutes and then scrape.
