an acid remover and a rain coat. It's a lot of work though.
Start with a wire brush. A lot will come off. For brick that has large crevices like old red brick, I used paint. My house had many previous owners and splashed a lot of white from painting windows. I wire brushed off a lot of it and the rest I painted over with red brick colored paint. I bought a very small sample jar from Home Depot and from a short distance you could not tell. Made a nice update from the ugly splash marks of white.
