Hello, Our turf situation we are found that core aeration is extremely effective to help break up the soil and get better results from seeding. Generally done in the fall aeration and overseeding with top dressing can really improve your turf’s appearance. Ive seen my nneighbor aerating and seeding this week in our zone 7.

Soil tests are always recommended every few years. Most every speaker in my master gardeners class recommend this for optimal way to address your soil and garden circumstances. The soil test box and instructions can be obtained from your local cooperative extension, unless you want your lawn service to do it.

If it is an area that never dries out, address that problem first. You won’t get seed to grow in soil that is too wet. It needs to be at least raked/scratched on top to give the seeds a chance. It is better to till the area to let the ground “breathe”.

Hi Shawna, you will need to add more topsoil to bring the level of the ground there up, Pat it down and add your grass seed, then top it with peat moss to help germinate the grass seeds. Hope this helps you out,
