I want to do the same thing actually. HAHA. You can buy fabric paint right at Micheals. But what I would do is buy ANY COLOR latex paint and add a fabric medium into it. Try liquitex fabric medium or ceramcoat textile medium. I haven't done this yet so I don't have one of my own posts for you but I have thought about doing it myself and I would use these products.
I have used liquitex fabric medium with very good results. As always read the labels for directions and what to use the product on.
You can wash wool rugs. Take it outside on cement and use a spray bottle with very diluted Dawn and water. Then spray it clean with a hose. Or use a carpet shampooer, making sure you get ALL the soap rinsed out as soap collects dirt. Drape it over a clothesline to dry.
Make sure it's a low flat weave. If plush will be brittle and yucky. Be sure to clean your rug first.
