How do I get the bled colors out?

I have a white flour cloth towel that I used Sharpie permanent ink markers to decorate, but when I washed the towel the colors bled. How can I get rid of the bled colors and how can I prevent that from happening in the future?

Hi Gale, unfortunately that is not too much that you can do now to get the colours out. In the future though, the longer you can wait to wash your linen the better. With paint on fabric, I always recommend waiting a full 30 days if possible. When paint (and Sharpies would be similar) are used, you need to wait for the water to evaporate out. Once that happens (anywhere from 3-4 wks) what is left will be nice and cured so should not bleed. Hope that helps a bit for next time.

Try a color catcher by Shout. Very cute. It might pull some of the design color. Then you can "re ink" and seal it. I would have to check into sealing the design, it's been a very long time since I've done something like that.

Not much you can do to remove the bleed. Next time just put it a hot dryer to set the marker or paint.

Ok , well you have nothing to lose , so I have a weird idea , that might work ???

Look for a carpet cleaner called Folex , it is a spray bottle . I found it at home depot for about $6 . This stuff is great it gets out , ink , rust , wine ... I have used it on clothing as a stain remover . I would spray some in a plastic cup , then use a q tip to apply to the stained areas ... Good luck !!!

You could try dabbing bleach on the bleed areas. I have had some success with this on clothes.

For future washes, they have products that absorb the bleed.

A Quilter"s tip. Try using blue Dawn. This is a quilter's trick that is used when a colour bleeds in the project. Just soak it in sink with blue Dawn, gently swirls to lift out colour bleeds. Best of luck!

I was going to suggest dabbing bleach on a "small bleed area" as mentioned above with cotton balls or q-tip and carefully rinse only the bleached area under water to get all bleach out before you move on to another area (it will take time,) but I think I would try the Quilter's tip first it may be much faster!!
