  • Creeping Jenny which is a light green cascading vine does really well in my shallow flower boxes that face east. I haven’t figured out what flowers to put in there yet though.

Calendula plants are self seeding and so easy to grow. Try Chives as these look like tall slim grass but can be cut to eat also. Small bulbs haven't long roots either. Hope this helps. Steve C

You would need to select small types of plants. Most plants will only grow as large as a container will allow but in a shallow box you will need to water more often as your soil won't be very deep and will quickly fill up with roots and not hold much water.

I have seen pansies in boxes or I have put portulacas in small boxes and they have done well. Maybe vinca or small succulents?

Phyllis, try petunias, nasturtiums, or daisies. Or go with a mossy flower box and plant small ferns and mushrooms. Astors give a bright display in small or large areas. Be experimental and have some fun. It’s Spring!
