How do I decorate this?

This is my new basement window/ window w/ with new egress ladder, heavy duty steel grate on top with Kalwall “rain deflector”.

Im thinking about decorating it, keeping in mind, that whatever is in there must be “push-able out of the way” in case of fire.

Also will not drill holes into the corrugated steel powder coated dirt retainer. That will rust it out.

Hanging things off of the steel lip that sticks up 2” from the patio above, won’t work, because that steel safety grate sits on that lip. It’s made to hold a 300 lb person who walks on it. It’s heavy.

I thought about fine bamboo fencing, but don’t want to glue it to the powder coating.

What do you think I should put in there to improve the view?

The view from the basement looking out the egress window.

    Sorry I wasn’t clear!

I want to decorate inside the window well, not get window treatments advice.

    Hey Cheryl,

Have you considered a window film? Sort of like peel and stick wallpaper or contact paper for your window.

You could do something that changes your view, like a beach scene, the Eiffel tower, or stained glass. It shouldn't interfere with the safety features and is completely removable!

You can find a ton of options on Amazon and Etsy.

Can't wait to see what you go with!

Maybe you can hang a curtain rod over the window and hang long drapes?

How about shutters? The type with an upper and lower. Leave the bottom one closes and the upper open.

I have a custom mini blind that fits between the columns. Thanks.

If someone doesn’t remember where the egress window is, I’m worried that they shouldn’t be sleeping in my new basement bedroom. They can sleep upstairs, lol.

My daughter lived in a basement apartment at one point, and her landlady hung flowering pots for her. Only solution for part of the year but it did brighten the view!

That would give you the look without the hassle. Good idea!

This is interesting. The first thing that comes to mind is hanging something from the steel grate. The possibilities are endless for this, from one mobile to many thin strands of whatever your taste is. Here's some examples. Google 'hanging art mobile'.

      Thanks.

Yes, I thought about that- something light and someone wouldn’t get tangled up in if they decided to go out the window in the dark without a phone flashlight.

Can you paint it? If so paint and add decals to make it look like a flowering wall? Or if possible real flowering plants or ferns on each side of the ladder.

Yes I can paint it, but the corrugated steel is going to be a hassle for me, although my bachelors degree is in Fine Arts, lol.

I’m thinking about 3 tension rods now and fabric panels that I don’t care if they get wet or dirty- and can hose them off and dry in the sun.

They have window clings that can transform it into a stained glass look. Still lets in the light but you wouldn't see the ladder, etc. outside - they are meant for privacy from outsiders looking in but I think it would work for your application.

What about getting Hooks and hanging pots ??? There has to be something you can hang over the edge, instead of drilling. Here's a page that might give you some ideas...
